Well dressing is an ancient custom unique to Derbyshire. Chesterfield began well dressing in 1864 when the Town Pump in Market Place was decorated after a very dry summer.
The festival returns again in September. You can find out how a well dressing is made by watching the well dressers at work. Once complete, the well dressings will be displayed at the ‘Crooked Spire’ Church in the porch and on the town pump at Market Place (opposite Primark).
