Waste not Cafe at Loundsley Green – a brand new project

Our presenter Alan Wilkinson went along to the trial of the Waste Not Cafe at Loundsley Green in Chesterfield – a brand new project aiming to address social isolation, food waste and food poverty.

He watched a delicious three course vegetarian and vegan meal being prepared in the kitchen beforehand, all made using surplus food that would have otherwise been thrown away by the supermarkets.

He met organiser Greg Hewitt and volunteers who organised the evening and saw the food being served to the customers who had paid a small fee to eat and drink together at the same table. Alan asked Greg about setting up the project and the inaurgural event: “The idea came from Martha Smith in Nottingham where 5 years ago a similar project was set up, a concepted meal bringing the community together and for everyone to enjoy all for an affordable rate. It makes a big impact, people enjoy coming back month on month and form friendships. I’m really excited to bring this to Chesterfield. I was amazed by the number of people interested through our facebook group and Transition Chesterfield who share the same values.

There are similar projects set up locally but we wanted this one to be more inclusive for all the community and if its a success hope to have monthly meals on the 3rd Sunday of the month” Contact Greg on Facebook via the Waste Not Café Chesterfield page.
