Yeah Man, Very funny…

It was coming to the time that I needed to ring Joshua Robertson.  When he contacted me on twitter and asked if I would like to do an interview with him for spire Radio, I have to say I was very excited.  But in truth, I couldn’t remember where I recognised his face from.  I knew that I’d seen him before and I was following him on twitter and I knew he was a famous comedian.  But I don’t remember seeing him on Mock The Week.

So I decided to do some research before the call, after a few moments on Google, it was clear he was very funny onstage.  I had seen some of his stand up material before.  But that wasn’t where I remembered him from and then it came to me.  I remembered watching a BBC documentary; The Dancer Who Was Told He’d Never Walk Again | Amazing Humans BBC 3  (Link to the video below) and there it was, the reason I’d followed him on Twitter, this man and the choreographer (Thomas Michael Voss)  both had heart-wrenching stories for different reasons and the whole program made you look at your life and say what am I doing to stretch myself?

And then it was time, time to ring this amazing human, the funny man himself. Joshua Robertson.

Within minutes we were talking like we had known each other for years, as though it was at the pub over a drink (a situation had he not been in London at the time would have been my preferred choice) We spoke about how he got to be in comedy, where his catchphrase “Yeah Man”  came from; and how close to being shot in New York City he was as a disabled Gangster!

Of course,  we had to talk about his accident aged 11, and subsequent battles and rehabilitation, which literally took years and stole some of his childhood.  His honest matter of fact approach to what happened was both shocking and inspirational.

You could be forgiven for thinking that it’s this lost childhood that allows his self-deprecation on stage, but don’t be thinking he is immature. Joshua is a proud father to his 14 month old boy, Jacob; having proposed to his fiancé live on stage during one of his stand up routines. He knows what he wants, and that’s to make people laugh, yeah man!
